Marny Shay Memorial Scholarship

Impact

During her career, Marny Shay worked one-on-one with teen moms enrolled in the Teen Parent Program of the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District, doing her best to educate them to prepare for their future. Looking back, she said, “The biggest thing my staff and I did was to change the goals and expectations of these young women.” They entered the program just to get a high school education, but over 80% of her students went on to get some type of college education. Marny was forced into retirement because of a physical disability. Her physical challenges only deepened her compassion for others so she continued to volunteer for several non-profits. Despite her health challenges, she remained strong in her commitment to education and her advocacy for young mothers, their children and individuals with disabilities.
